Jensen Drive Bridge over
Union Pacific Railroad

Client: Miami County, Kansas

Miami County Highway Department selected Affinis Corp. to provide bridge analysis and design services for the Jensen Drive Bridge located in Osawatomie, Kansas.   The existing 5-span, 199-foot long, curved, steel beam bridge is on a vertical curve. Constructed in 1983, the bridge is showing excessive deterioration of the wearing surface and the abutment bearing devices.

Our engineers completed a bridge deck condition report that included chain dragging the bridge deck, coring the concrete deck, conducting chloride-content testing, and determining the location of the reinforcing steel in the existing deck. The condition analysis found that nearly 55-percent of the deck was delaminated, the chloride content was high, and the concrete cover over the reinforcing steel was not sufficient.

Because the steel beams were in good condition and provided adequate structural capacity, our engineers recommended replacing the existing concrete deck with an 8-inch concrete slab with special coarse aggregate for wear and absorption. Because the steel beams are pushing on the backwall of the abutment, we recommended replacing the abutment backwall and bearing devices.  We are currently completing the design.
