Hyde Park Residential Street Improvements

Client: City of Hutchinson, Kansas

The historic Hyde Park neighborhood was constructed in the 1920s using brick pavers for the street pavement. Since the neighborhood’s street construction, the City has maintained the brick streets beyond their useful life. Affinis has been selected by the City to design street, stormwater, sanitary sewer, and water line improvements in the neighborhood for construction in 2010. In addition to the City provided improvements, the City and design team has met with the residents of Hyde Park to discuss traffic calming and aesthetic improvements that preserve the historic nature of the neighborhood. The neighborhood is currently considering forming a benefit district to pay for aesthetic improvements such as street lights, a park walking trail, and benches in the park.

The design team kicked off the project with an intensive citizen involvement program aimed at gaining buy-in for the neighborhood improvements and getting the residents involved in the design process. Two workshops were held on consecutive nights. The work shop objectives were to:

  • Provide an overview of the background and design process
  • Understand resident’s issues and opportunities
  • Explain and get feedback on traffic calming alternatives
  • Provide information on benefit districts
  • Provide assistance with ideas for enhancements and the cost associated with them
  • Determine the level of interest in forming a benefit district.

The design team has taken the information from the citizen involvement program and prepared a concept report for the City Council. The design team is currently preparing the preliminary design plans for the project.
