2002 Residential Street Program

Strang Line Neighborhood

Client: City of Overland Park, Kansas

Our engineers provided design services for the Strang Line neighborhood near downtown Overland Park. The half-square-mile neighborhood is bounded by 75th Street, 79th Street, Lowell Street, and Floyd Street, and was the most comprehensive neighborhood we have had the opportunity to design under the Overland Park Residential Street Program.

The neighborhood approach to design gave us a unique opportunity to enhance the neighborhood through a comprehensive approach to traffic management as well as to develop a pedestrian-friendly gateway to downtown Overland Park. Entrance islands and mini-roundabouts slow traffic, provide safer pedestrian crossings at intersections, and enhance the beauty of the neighborhood.

The project also developed a bike/hike trail along Santa Fe Road, taking advantage of additional right-of-way width abandoned from the historic Strang Line Railroad.  Additionally, constructing the new sidewalk and trail system created a new circular walking loop within the neighborhood.

SIGNIFICANT DESIGN ITEMS:

  • Mini roundabouts for traffic calming
  • Gateway entrances for traffic calming and neighborhood identification
  • Sidewalks and bike/hike trail
  • Street lighting
